Escuela Tzanchaj
Tzanchaj is an impoverished village situated just outside of Santiago Atitlan. The population is 100% Tzutujil, a Mayan group local to Lake Atitlan.
When she visited the village in 2003, Sharing the Dream director Diane found children studying outside underneath sheets of plastic. During the lengthy periods of rainfall that hit Guatemala, school was inevitably cancelled. The parents and community desperately needed better options for their children and requested help to buy land. In 2004, sharing the dream purchased a finca (a small coffee plantation) and donated the land to the newly formed parent association, and construction began in 2006.
The school has been a fantastic success, and the children now have a safe, clean, and dry environment in which to study under the direction of dedicated and passionate teachers.
