    Stories of Survival is a book about our Santiago elders. It is written by Laura Wilson and photographs are by Denny Pearson. Within the book the Mayan elders share their memories and experiences.

    Original children’s items created with help to the groups from our Artisan Development project.

  • Coffee

    Our Guatemalan coffee is fair trade and organic. The green beans are sent up to the states from Guatemala. They are roasted and packaged in Parker, South Dakota, at a small business. We roast the beans as needed so that they remain fresh.

    This jewelry is made by our own Sharing the Dream jewelry group. The young women who make the jewelry receive about three times more income than they would make working for a middle person. The profit from the jewelry goes to support our elder center.

  • Maguey

    Maguey is a cactus that is natural to Guatemala. The longest leaves of the plant are chosen and then they are roasted. The leaves are then soaked in water for eight days until the outer husk rots off. The leaves are combed or scraped until the fiber is made accessible. After this the fiber is dyed with natural dyes from plants, leaves, roots, seeds, husks and barks from the trees. Every piece is unique and a one of a kind. The 27 women who design and weave this product live in the state of Chiquimula and the profits they make from their weaving help to sustain their families.
