AMMID’s nine women’s groups are indigenous women from the Mam culture who live
in the Comitancillo area of Guatemala. The area is mountainous with very little land suitable for agriculture and livestock
farming. The area is currently facing a drought which makes farming even more difficult.
Due to lack of work in the local area, workers, and in some cases, entire families temporarily
migrate to the coastal regions of the country to work on the fincas (coffee or sugar plantations) but the income generated
covers only basic subsistence needs. Sharing the Dream is working with the women of AMMID to help develop their traditional
regional crafts into income-generating products.
